Schengen Visa Document Checklist for Indian Applicants (2026)

Use this list when you apply for a Schengen visa from India through VFS Global India or directly at an embassy. Indian applicants face one of the highest scrutiny tiers globally — refusal rates are above the EU average — so document quality matters more than document quantity. Always match the official embassy PDF for your destination country; this page is a practical map, not a legal guarantee.

Common Missing or Weak Documents from India

  1. Bank statements missing the bank stamp on every page — consulates reject digital-only or unstamped PDFs.
  2. Salary credits don’t match payslips or salary certificate — verified line-by-line at VFS.
  3. ITR submitted but no acknowledgement number — only ITR-V with the acknowledgement counts.
  4. NOC missing approved leave dates or generic wording.
  5. Travel insurance certificate only in INR without EUR equivalent — common reason for re-submission.
  6. Cover letter that’s a template — visa officers spot these. Write it yourself, plainly.
  7. Hotel and flight dates that don’t match the application form by even one day.
  8. Self-employed applicants without GST registration when their business clearly should be registered.

Most Questions Asked by Visa Applicants

How many months of bank statements do I need?

Last 3 to 6 months is standard. Check your destination consulate’s exact requirement — some (Germany, Switzerland) ask for 6 months, others (Spain, Greece) accept 3. Statements must be on bank letterhead with stamp and seal on every page.

Do I really need ITR?

Yes for most adult applicants. Last 2-3 years of ITR (ITR-V with acknowledgement number, or Form 16 for salaried) is one of the most-checked documents. If you don’t file ITR (e.g., homemaker, student), a sponsor letter with the sponsor’s ITR is the standard substitute.

Should I submit Aadhaar?

Not required, but commonly attached as residence proof. Your passport is the primary identity document. PAN is more important than Aadhaar for financial documents.

What if my company doesn’t give NOC in standard format?

The NOC must include: your name, designation, joining date, salary, approved leave dates, contact details of HR/issuing officer, and company letterhead with signature and stamp. If your employer uses a different template, ensure all these elements are present — missing any one is a frequent refusal reason.

Are printed bookings mandatory?

Yes. Most VFS centres in India require printed copies of all booking documents, even if you uploaded them online. Bring originals and one set of photocopies.

What about students and homemakers?

Students need bonafide certificate, marksheets, college ID, and a parent sponsorship pack (parent’s ITR + bank statements + sponsor letter). Homemakers need spouse’s full sponsor pack plus marriage certificate. See our homemakers guide and unemployed visa guide.
