🇮🇪 Ireland Visa Guide
⚠️ Important: Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa does NOT work for Ireland. You need a separate Irish visa!
Why Ireland is Different
While Ireland is in the European Union (EU), it opted out of the Schengen Agreement. This means:
- ❌ Schengen visa does NOT allow entry to Ireland
- ❌ Irish visa does NOT allow entry to Schengen countries
- ✅ You need separate visas for each
- ✅ UK visa holders may use BIVS (see below)

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate visa for Ireland if I have a Schengen visa?
Yes. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa gives you no rights to enter Ireland. You must apply separately for an Irish Short Stay Visa (Join the BIVS if you're Indian and already hold a UK visa). Check the Irish Immigration website (irishimmigration.ie) for current requirements.
What is the BIVS (British-Irish Visa Scheme)?
The British-Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) allows citizens of India and China who hold a valid UK visa to also travel to Ireland without a separate Irish visa. The visa must be endorsed for multiple entries and still be valid. Not all UK visa types qualify — a standard UK visitor visa with multiple entry endorsement is required.
How long does an Irish visa take to process?
Standard processing time is 4–8 weeks from the date your complete application is received. During peak summer months (June–August), processing can extend to 10–12 weeks. Apply at least 12 weeks before your intended travel. Emergency / urgent processing has limited availability.
Can I work in Ireland on a tourist visa?
No. A short stay / tourist visa does not give you permission to work in Ireland. Any work — even short-term or remote work for a foreign employer — requires the appropriate employment permissions. Misrepresenting the purpose of your visit is grounds for visa refusal and potential bans.
Is Dublin Schengen or non-Schengen?
Dublin is not Schengen. Ireland has an opt-out from the Schengen Agreement and maintains its own border controls — part of the Common Travel Area (CTA) with the United Kingdom. This means when flying Dublin → Paris, you pass through Irish exit controls and French Schengen entry controls separately.
