Schengen Visa Document Checklist for Ireland Residents (2026)
Use this list when you apply for a Schengen visa from Ireland through VFS Global Dublin or the relevant Schengen consulate in Dublin. This checklist targets non-EU/EEA nationals resident in Ireland on an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) — the typical Schengen applicant from Dublin. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens don’t need a Schengen visa for short stays.
Ireland-Focused Core Checklist
- Passport — valid at least 3 months beyond your planned return, with 2 blank pages.
- Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card — both sides, valid at least 3 months beyond return.
- Stamp letter from Burgh Quay / Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) — confirmation of registration if your IRP card is in renewal.
- Completed Schengen application form + signed declaration.
- Two recent biometric photos (35x45mm, ICAO standard, white background).
- Irish bank statements — last 3-6 months from AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB, Revolut, or other Irish account, stamped at the branch or downloaded with bank branding.
- Salary certificate / employment letter on Irish company letterhead, mentioning PPS-linked salary credits.
- P60 or recent payslips (last 3 months).
- Revenue myAccount Statement of Liability or Tax Credit Certificate if available.
- Travel insurance — minimum €30,000 medical with repatriation. See our Ireland insurance guide.
- Confirmed return flight reservation.
- Hotel bookings covering every Schengen night.
- Cover letter explaining purpose, dates, and your strong ties to Ireland (job, IRP, family).
Ireland-Specific: Understanding Your IRP Stamp
The stamp on your Irish Residence Permit tells the visa officer what your status in Ireland is — and indirectly, how strong your return ties are. Bring documents that match your stamp category.
| Stamp | Status | Extra documents to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp 1 | Employment permit holder | Critical Skills / General Employment Permit, employer letter, salary certificate. |
| Stamp 1G | Post-study graduate | Graduation cert, current job offer or employer letter; show clear post-IRP plan. |
| Stamp 2 / 2A | Student (full-time English/degree programme) | College enrolment letter, attendance record, course fees paid receipt, sponsor or self-funded financials. |
| Stamp 3 | Dependant of permit holder | Principal IRP holder’s passport, IRP, employment letter, marriage cert / birth cert for relationship. |
| Stamp 4 | Long-term residence (incl. spouse of Irish citizen, refugee, naturalisation track) | Strongest residence stamp. Marriage cert (if spouse of Irish citizen) or stamp 4 grant letter. |
| Stamp 5 | Permission to remain without restriction (5+ years lawful residence) | Long-Term Residence Letter, original Stamp 5 grant. |
If you’re in the renewal window and your physical IRP card has expired, bring the Burgh Quay renewal confirmation email plus a stamped letter from your local Garda registration office.

Extra Documents for Specific Profiles
Recently moved to Ireland (less than 6 months)
- Original entry visa and immigration officer stamps in passport.
- Employer relocation letter (if applicable).
- Strong financial pack — Irish bank statements may be short, supplement with statements from your previous country.
- Consider waiting until you have 6 months of Irish residence before applying to first-time-tough destinations like Germany or Switzerland.
Critical Skills Permit holders
- Critical Skills Employment Permit (original + copy).
- Employer letter explicitly referencing the Critical Skills designation.
- Strong financial standing (CSEP salary threshold automatically helps).
Stamp 2 students
- Bonafide letter from your college (current enrolment + attendance).
- Course fees paid receipt.
- Sponsor financials if parents fund: their bank statements + relationship proof + sponsor letter.
- Plan travel during official Irish college breaks to avoid attendance concerns.
BIVS / dual-visa scenarios
- If you hold a UK visa and want to also visit Ireland, the British-Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) lets Indian and Chinese nationals enter Ireland on a multi-entry UK visa — but that’s separate from Schengen. Your Schengen visa does not give Ireland or UK access, and vice versa.
Common Missing or Weak Documents from Ireland
- IRP card validity below 3 months beyond planned return — consulates reject before reading the rest.
- Salary certificate generated from HR portal without wet signature or stamp — some consulates query this.
- Bank statements without bank stamp when submitting physical copies — download as PDF with bank branding instead, or get statements stamped at the branch.
- Submitting VHI / Laya / Irish Life Health as travel insurance — these don’t meet Schengen requirements.
- Generic cover letter with no reference to specific cities, dates, or your ties to Ireland.
- Stamp 3 dependants applying without principal IRP holder’s pack.
- Hotel and flight dates mismatched with the application form by even one day.
Complete your visa file

Most Questions Asked by Visa Applicants
What stamp on my IRP card lets me apply for a Schengen visa?
Stamps 1, 1G, 2, 2A, 4, and 5 are all accepted by Schengen consulates in Dublin if your IRP is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return. Stamp 3 dependants need the principal holder’s documents.
What if my IRP card is expired but I’ve already renewed at Burgh Quay?
Bring the renewal confirmation email from immigration.ie or the stamped letter from your local Garda registration office, plus a screenshot of your renewal status. Most consulates accept this for one-off Schengen applications, but it’s safest to wait until your new IRP arrives.
Do I need to submit P60 or just payslips?
Both help. P60 is the strongest annual proof; recent payslips (last 3 months) corroborate ongoing employment. The Revenue Statement of Liability from myAccount is an excellent supplementary document.
Is Revolut accepted as a bank statement?
Yes, most Schengen consulates in Dublin accept Revolut statements alongside or in place of traditional bank statements. Download a stamped PDF from the app (Settings → Statement) showing 3-6 months of activity.
Does my VHI / Laya / Irish Life Health insurance work?
No. Domestic Irish health insurance covers treatment in Ireland, not abroad. You need a dedicated Schengen travel medical certificate. Your EHIC card also doesn’t count.
What if I’m a Critical Skills Permit holder applying for the first time?
Critical Skills applicants generally face fewer issues — the permit itself signals strong ties to Ireland. Bring the original permit, your employment letter referencing CSEP, and standard financial documents. Stamp 1 with CSEP is one of the strongest profiles at VFS Dublin.
