Schengen Transit Visa from Ireland
For connecting flights through European airports
Flying from Dublin to the US with a layover in Frankfurt? Or to India via Amsterdam? You might need a Schengen transit visa - but not always! This guide explains when you do and don't need one.
Quick Navigation
Do I Need a Transit Visa?
It depends on three factors:
- Your nationality - Some nationalities need Airport Transit Visas (ATV)
- Type of transit - Staying in airport vs. leaving the airport
- Your other visas - Having certain visas exempts you
Types of Transit
| Airside Transit | Stay in airport transit area only. Don't pass immigration. | Usually NO (if you have IRP) |
| Landside Transit | Leave airport, enter Schengen territory (even briefly) | YES - Regular Schengen visa needed |
| Overnight Transit | Need to stay in a hotel near airport | YES - Regular Schengen visa needed |
| Terminal Change | Need to exit & re-enter security (some airports) | Depends on airport |
Airside Transit (Usually No Visa Needed)
Airside transit means you stay within the international transit zone of the airport. You don't pass through immigration or leave the airport.
If You Have an Irish Residence Permit (IRP)
✅ Good news! If you hold a valid Irish Residence Permit (IRP card), you are EXEMPT from the Airport Transit Visa requirement for most Schengen countries.
This means you can transit through Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, etc. without any transit visa - just show your IRP and onward ticket!
What You Need for Airside Transit
- ✅ Valid passport
- ✅ Valid Irish Residence Permit (IRP)
- ✅ Confirmed onward flight ticket (same day)
- ✅ Visa for your final destination (if required)
When You DO Need a Visa
Scenario 1: Leaving the Airport
If you need to leave the international transit area for any reason:
- Collecting checked baggage and re-checking
- Changing airports (e.g., Paris CDG to Paris Orly)
- Long layover where you want to explore the city
- Overnight stay in a hotel
→ You need a regular Schengen visa (Type C)
Scenario 2: No Valid IRP
If your IRP has expired or you don't have one, and you're from a country on the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) list, you'll need an ATV.
Countries Requiring Airport Transit Visa
Citizens of these countries normally need an ATV for airside transit (but IRP holders are usually exempt):
- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia
- Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan
- Somalia, Sri Lanka, and others
Note: This list can vary by Schengen country. Always verify.
How to Apply for a Transit Visa
If you do need a transit visa, here's how to apply from Ireland:
For Airport Transit Visa (Type A)
- Apply at the embassy of the transit country
- Fee: Same as regular Schengen visa (€90)
- Documents: Passport, photos, flight itinerary, visa for destination (if needed)
- Processing: 10-15 days
For Regular Schengen Visa (Type C) for Transit
If you need to leave the airport during your layover:
- Apply for a regular short-stay visa
- Purpose: Transit/layover
- Documents: Standard Schengen application + full flight itinerary
Tips for Transit Through Schengen
✅ Do:
- Always carry your IRP when transiting - it's your exemption proof
- Book flights with reasonable layover times (2-4 hours)
- Book connecting flights on the same ticket when possible
- Check if terminal change requires exiting secure area
❌ Don't:
- Book overnight layovers unless you have a Schengen visa
- Assume you can leave the airport without a visa
- Book separate tickets for connections (luggage issues)
- Transit with an expired IRP
