Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one Schengen visa for all 29 countries?

Yes. A valid Schengen visa allows entry into all 29 Schengen member states without border controls between them. However, your visa must be issued for the country where you spend the most time (or your first port of entry if visiting multiple countries equally). Using a visa from the "wrong" country is a grey area — the visa is still technically valid but can cause issues at some borders.

Which Schengen countries are easiest for visa approval?

Greece, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia are commonly reported as having higher approval rates, particularly for first-time applicants. This is partly due to lower tourism demand and more straightforward application processes. See our easiest Schengen visa country guide for a full breakdown by nationality.

Is the UK in the Schengen Area?

No. The United Kingdom left the EU in 2020 and was never a full Schengen member. UK residents applying for a Schengen visa must apply separately — their UK visa (or IRP card) does not grant access to the Schengen Area. See our UK residents Schengen visa guide.

What happens if I overstay in the Schengen Area?

Overstaying your Schengen visa is a serious violation. Consequences include: immediate deportation at departure, a Schengen-wide entry ban (typically 1–5 years), a formal record in the SIS II information system, and significant difficulties obtaining future Schengen visas from any member state. Always depart before your authorised stay expires.
