📅 Schengen Visa Validity Explained

Got your Schengen visa but confused about the dates and numbers on it? This guide explains everything - from the 90/180 rule to understanding your visa sticker.

The 90/180 Day Rule

You can stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.

What This Means

  • It's a rolling window, not fixed calendar months
  • Count backward 180 days from today
  • How many days did you spend in Schengen during that period?
  • That count must not exceed 90

Reading Your Visa Sticker

Your Schengen visa sticker contains important information:

FieldMeaning
VALID FORCountries where visa is valid (usually "SCHENGEN STATES")
FROM - UNTILVisa corridor - earliest entry and latest exit dates
TYPEC = Short stay (tourist/business)
NUMBER OF ENTRIES01, 02, or MULT (multiple)
DURATION OF STAYMaximum days you can stay (e.g., 15 DAYS, 30 DAYS, 90 DAYS)

Example: Understanding Your Visa

Your visa shows:

  • FROM: 01-06-2026
  • UNTIL: 30-06-2026
  • DURATION OF STAY: 15 DAYS
  • ENTRIES: 01

What this means:

  • You can enter anytime between June 1-30, 2026
  • You can stay for maximum 15 days
  • You must exit by June 30 (even if 15 days aren't up)
  • You can only enter once

Validity vs Duration - The Difference

Validity Period (Corridor)

The "FROM" and "UNTIL" dates define when you can travel. You must:

  • Enter on or after the FROM date
  • Exit on or before the UNTIL date

Duration of Stay

The maximum number of days you can stay. Important:

  • May be less than the validity period
  • Example: 30-day corridor but only 15-day stay allowed
  • Never exceed the duration, even within validity

How to Calculate Your Days

  1. Day of entry counts as Day 1
  2. Day of exit counts as last day
  3. All days in Schengen count - including transit
  4. Non-Schengen days don't count - UK, Ireland, Croatia time
💡 Use the Official Calculator: The EU provides a Schengen Calculator to track your days.

Multiple Entry Visa Validity

If you have a 1-year multiple entry visa:

  • Can enter and exit unlimited times
  • Still limited to 90 days per 180-day period
  • Each trip counts toward your 90-day limit
  • Must track cumulative days across all trips

Example

  • Trip 1: January - 20 days
  • Trip 2: March - 30 days
  • Trip 3: May - 30 days
  • Total: 80 days used (10 days remaining in 180-day window)

Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Confusing validity period with allowed stay
  • ❌ Thinking 90 days resets every calendar year
  • ❌ Not counting entry and exit days
  • ❌ Forgetting transit days count
  • ❌ Not tracking days with multiple entry visa

What Happens If You Overstay?

  • 🚫 Entry ban (1-5 years)
  • 🚫 Fine at immigration
  • 🚫 Future visa applications affected
  • 🚫 SIS database entry (all Schengen countries notified)

Even 1 day overstay has consequences!

FAQs

Can I stay 90 days, leave, and return immediately?

No. After using 90 days, you must wait until those days "fall off" the 180-day window. Use the calculator to know when you can return.

Does time in UK/Ireland count?

No. UK and Ireland are not in Schengen, so days there don't count toward your 90-day Schengen limit.

My visa says 30 days but validity is 60 days. Can I stay 60 days?

No! You can only stay 30 days (duration). The 60-day validity is just the window during which you can travel.
