Special Situations
On Probation
If you are within your probation period, explicitly state so in the letter: "[Name] is currently serving a probation period ending [date] and has been granted leave with the understanding that [he/she/they] will continue employment thereafter." Hiding probation and having it discovered through Form 16 is a common rejection trigger.
Recently Changed Jobs
Include both your current employer's NOC and your previous employer's experience letter. Officers want to see continuous employment — a gap in letters raises questions about income stability.
Government Employee
Government employees must submit leave sanctioned order along with the NOC from the competent authority (Head of Department / District Collector / equivalent). A general NOC without the leave order is insufficient.
Self-Employed / Business Owner
You cannot write your own NOC. Instead submit: GST registration, company incorporation certificate (if Pvt Ltd), CA letter confirming business existence and income, and bank statements showing business transactions.
Common Mistakes That Cause Rejection
- Vague wording — "Employee may travel" without specific dates or return confirmation
- No salary mentioned — salary is a key employment tie indicator
- Leave dates not matching travel dates — must cover your entire travel period
- Letter too old — dated more than 4–6 weeks before VFS appointment
- No company letterhead — handwritten or plain paper NOCs are rejected
- Not signed by authorised person — a junior colleague's signature is insufficient
Most Questions Asked by Visa Applicants
Is NOC letter mandatory for Schengen visa from India?
Yes for salaried employees — it is the primary proof of employment ties showing you have a job to return to. Without it, officers cannot verify you intend to return to India after the trip.
Who should sign the NOC letter?
HR Manager, Department Head, or Reporting Manager — an authorised representative of the company. Must be on company letterhead with stamp if the company uses one.
What if I am on probation?
Mention the probation period explicitly in the letter. Do not hide it — salary slips and Form 16 will reveal it anyway, and a discrepancy looks like deception.
Do self-employed people need an NOC?
No — self-employed applicants submit GST registration, incorporation documents, CA letter, and business bank statements instead of an employer NOC.
