What USA Residents Should Know

Finland — Helsinki, Lapland, and Santa Claus Village — draws US visitors for two distinct experiences: summer midnight sun and winter Northern Lights / Arctic adventures. VFS Global handles Finnish consulate applications. Finland's daily financial requirement is approximately €80/day. Helsinki Airport (HEL) is a major Finnair hub with direct US connections and onward flights throughout Schengen.

Winter Lapland season (November–March) is peak for Santa Claus Village (Rovaniemi) and Northern Lights. Summer midnight sun peaks June–July in northern Finland. Apply 6–8 weeks in advance for both peak seasons.

Documents for US-Based Applicants

Requirements for Finland visa applications from the USA follow the standard Schengen checklist. Non-US citizens residing in the USA (green card holders, H-1B, L-1, F-1 visa holders) must also include their US immigration status document.

  • Completed visa application form — from the Finland VFS portal, signed and dated
  • Valid passport — 3+ months validity after return, at least 2 blank pages. Include old passports with prior travel stamps.
  • US status document — green card, H-1B, L-1, F-1, or other valid US visa / employment authorization document
  • 2 passport photos — 35×45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months
  • Travel insurance — minimum $32,000 USD (€30,000) medical coverage — see our Schengen travel insurance guide
  • Flight reservation — round-trip itinerary with dates (not a paid ticket — use an on-hold reservation)
  • Hotel bookings — with free cancellation for every night of your stay
  • US bank statements — last 3 months showing sufficient funds (~€80/day for Finland)
  • Cover letter — explaining your itinerary, travel purpose, and why you will return to the USA
  • US employer letter — confirming your position, salary, and approved leave dates

For the complete checklist with guidance on each document, see the full US applicant document checklist.

Top Tips for Visiting Finland

  • Helsinki: The Design District is compact and walkable. The Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square are free. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress (UNESCO) is a 15-minute ferry from Market Square — excellent half-day trip.
  • Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village): Book accommodation and reindeer safaris well in advance for December — this is peak season and fills up months ahead. Northern Lights are visible October–March when skies are clear.
  • Lapland Safaris: Dog sledding, snowmobile tours, and ice fishing are popular winter activities. Book directly with licensed operators — reputable ones include Arctic Circle Safaris and Saariselkä.
  • Sauna culture: Try a traditional Finnish smoke sauna (savusauna) experience — very different from hotel saunas. Löyly in Helsinki and Kuusamon Portti in Lapland are notable options.
  • Midnight Sun (June–July): Northern Finland has 24-hour daylight in midsummer. Pack an eye mask for sleeping — blinds are often inadequate.
