What USA Residents Should Know
Hungary — Budapest's thermal baths, the Danube, and Eger wine country — is one of Central Europe's most popular Schengen destinations for US visitors. VFS Global handles Hungarian consulate applications. Hungary's daily financial requirement is approximately €50/day. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) has direct and one-stop connections from many US cities. Budapest is significantly more affordable than Vienna or Prague.
Peak travel is April–October. Budapest's ruin bars, thermal spa culture, and Danube panorama make it one of Europe's most distinctive city breaks. Apply 4–6 weeks before travel.
Documents for US-Based Applicants
Requirements for Hungary visa applications from the USA follow the standard Schengen checklist. Non-US citizens residing in the USA (green card holders, H-1B, L-1, F-1 visa holders) must also include their US immigration status document.
- Completed visa application form — from the Hungary VFS portal, signed and dated
- Valid passport — 3+ months validity after return, at least 2 blank pages. Include old passports with prior travel stamps.
- US status document — green card, H-1B, L-1, F-1, or other valid US visa / employment authorization document
- 2 passport photos — 35×45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months
- Travel insurance — minimum $32,000 USD (€30,000) medical coverage — see our Schengen travel insurance guide
- Flight reservation — round-trip itinerary with dates (not a paid ticket — use an on-hold reservation)
- Hotel bookings — with free cancellation for every night of your stay
- US bank statements — last 3 months showing sufficient funds (~€50/day for Hungary)
- Cover letter — explaining your itinerary, travel purpose, and why you will return to the USA
- US employer letter — confirming your position, salary, and approved leave dates
For the complete checklist with guidance on each document, see the full US applicant document checklist.
Top Tips for Visiting Hungary
- Thermal baths: Széchenyi, Gellért, and Rudas are the most famous. Széchenyi is most popular (book online in advance); Rudas has a rooftop pool with panoramic views (advance booking essential for weekends).
- Fisherman's Bastion and Buda Castle: Best Danube panorama views in Budapest. Free to walk around the Bastion's terrace exterior. The National Gallery inside Buda Castle is excellent.
- Ruin bars: Szimpla Kert is the original and most famous. Visit on a Sunday morning for the farmers' market atmosphere rather than the weekend night crowds.
- Danube Bend (Visegrád, Esztergom): Day trip north from Budapest — medieval castle ruins and cathedral views. Accessible by ferry in summer or bus year-round.
- Eger: 2 hours from Budapest — wine caves, baroque old town, and the Valley of Beautiful Women (wine cellar district). Excellent day trip or overnight.
