What USA Residents Should Know

Portugal — Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and Madeira — has become one of the fastest-growing US tourist destinations in Schengen. VFS Global handles Portuguese consulate applications. Portugal's daily financial requirement is approximately €75/day. Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) and Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) both have direct US connections on TAP Air Portugal and US carriers.

Portugal consistently has one of the higher approval rates among Schengen countries for well-prepared applications. Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the best travel seasons — summer is hot and crowded, especially in the Algarve.

Documents for US-Based Applicants

Requirements for Portugal visa applications from the USA follow the standard Schengen checklist. Non-US citizens residing in the USA (green card holders, H-1B, L-1, F-1 visa holders) must also include their US immigration status document.

  • Completed visa application form — from the Portugal VFS portal, signed and dated
  • Valid passport — 3+ months validity after return, at least 2 blank pages. Include old passports with prior travel stamps.
  • US status document — green card, H-1B, L-1, F-1, or other valid US visa / employment authorization document
  • 2 passport photos — 35×45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months
  • Travel insurance — minimum $32,000 USD (€30,000) medical coverage — see our Schengen travel insurance guide
  • Flight reservation — round-trip itinerary with dates (not a paid ticket — use an on-hold reservation)
  • Hotel bookings — with free cancellation for every night of your stay
  • US bank statements — last 3 months showing sufficient funds (~€75/day for Portugal)
  • Cover letter — explaining your itinerary, travel purpose, and why you will return to the USA
  • US employer letter — confirming your position, salary, and approved leave dates

For the complete checklist with guidance on each document, see the full US applicant document checklist.

Top Tips for Visiting Portugal

  • Lisbon: The Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery are UNESCO sites — visit early morning to avoid summer crowds. Pastéis de Belém (the original custard tart shop) always has a queue but moves fast.
  • Porto: Book a port wine cellar tour in Vila Nova de Gaia — most major quintas offer tastings. The azulejo-covered São Bento train station is one of Portugal's most beautiful architectural sights.
  • Sintra: Day trip from Lisbon — book Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira tickets online in advance. Sintra gets very crowded in summer and parking is extremely limited.
  • Algarve (Lagos, Albufeira): Best for beach holidays. Book accommodation well in advance for July–August. The dramatic Ponta da Piedade sea stacks near Lagos require a boat tour.
  • Madeira and Azores: These autonomous regions require additional flights from Lisbon — include these connections in your itinerary.
