What USA Residents Should Know
Slovakia — Bratislava, the High Tatras, and medieval castles — is one of the most affordable and least-crowded Schengen destinations for US visitors. VFS Global handles Slovak consulate applications. Slovakia's daily financial requirement is approximately €50/day. Bratislava Airport (BTS) is close to Vienna International Airport (VIE) — many US visitors combine the two capitals in a single trip.
Bratislava is only 1 hour from Vienna by bus or boat, making it an easy add-on. The High Tatras offer excellent hiking (June–September) and skiing (December–March). Apply 3–4 weeks before travel.
Documents for US-Based Applicants
Requirements for Slovakia visa applications from the USA follow the standard Schengen checklist. Non-US citizens residing in the USA (green card holders, H-1B, L-1, F-1 visa holders) must also include their US immigration status document.
- Completed visa application form — from the Slovakia VFS portal, signed and dated
- Valid passport — 3+ months validity after return, at least 2 blank pages. Include old passports with prior travel stamps.
- US status document — green card, H-1B, L-1, F-1, or other valid US visa / employment authorization document
- 2 passport photos — 35×45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months
- Travel insurance — minimum $32,000 USD (€30,000) medical coverage — see our Schengen travel insurance guide
- Flight reservation — round-trip itinerary with dates (not a paid ticket — use an on-hold reservation)
- Hotel bookings — with free cancellation for every night of your stay
- US bank statements — last 3 months showing sufficient funds (~€50/day for Slovakia)
- Cover letter — explaining your itinerary, travel purpose, and why you will return to the USA
- US employer letter — confirming your position, salary, and approved leave dates
For the complete checklist with guidance on each document, see the full US applicant document checklist.
Top Tips for Visiting Slovakia
- Bratislava Old Town: Compact and walkable — Bratislava Castle, St. Martin's Cathedral, and the Main Square can be covered in a half day. The castle has excellent views across the Danube toward Austria.
- Vienna day trip: Vienna is 1 hour from Bratislava by RegioJet or Flixbus. Combined Bratislava–Vienna itineraries are extremely popular and represent excellent value — Bratislava accommodation costs a fraction of Vienna's.
- High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry): Slovakia's alpine region — excellent hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Štrbské Pleso and Poprad are the main access towns. The Tatras are less crowded than Austrian or Swiss alpine resorts.
- Orava Castle: One of Slovakia's most dramatic castles, used as a filming location for Nosferatu. 3 hours from Bratislava — worth combining with a High Tatras trip.
- Banská Štiavnica: UNESCO-listed historic mining town in central Slovakia — one of the country's most beautiful towns and surprisingly unknown among international visitors.

Select Slovakia portal; verify Schengen nights beat Austrian totals if unsure.
Where do I find latest address and center timings?
Use the official Attend-Centre link for your city — the link is in the Cities & Official VFS Links table above. It shows the current address, opening hours, and submission process for each VFS Global centre.
Should I buy final flight tickets before visa approval?
No embassies accept a flight reservation or itinerary. You do not need paid tickets. Use a hold booking service to get a valid reservation with a real PNR, and only buy final tickets after your visa is approved.
